About MeMy name is Steve Knapp and I am a husband, father, homeowner, and a successful rose gardener. My success is not not because I have a "green thumb", or any specialized training related to roses or gardening. Rather, I believe my success comes from my ability to find answers!Professionly, I became a computer programmer in the early '80s. The most important skill needed to be really successful as a technical architect and engineer is the ability to identify problems and then (most importantly) find the answer! As a result of my 25+ years of experience with computers, I have the added advantage of understanding how to quickly sift through the vast amounts of information that can be found with the online search engines (e.g. Google, Yahoo, and MSN LiveSearch). My first experience with growing roses came about in 1996 when my family moved to Colorado, and we bought my aunt's house - which she had lived in for nearly 40 years. While the house (and most of the yard) became ours, the rose garden remained hers... and of course I was expected to maintain it to her standards. The first year was a lot of work. I didmy best to follow her instructions, and was rewarded with only limited success (nothing died). The second year, I tried as many tricks as I could find - buying all of the expensive tools, soil preparations, fertilizers, weed killers, bug killers, and whatever anybody told me would work - the roses were much happier, but it was a lot of work (every weekend) and I still didn't meet her expectations. I was very thankful for the long dormant season in Colorado. Before the third season began, I decided I couldn't possibly devote as much time to the roses as I had the previous year. So, I began looking for ways to keep the roses healthy and happy without giving up every weekend. Much to my surprise (and my aunt's) the third year, MY roses began producing massive blooms. Not only were the blooms bigger, but there were more blooms than ever and they were showing off brighter colors than she had ever seen. If I can have that kind of success with the short growing season, cool weather, and high altitude of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, imagine what you can achieve in your garden. |
